Thanks for coming, and a question

Thanks for coming to our paper! We are looking or simple and operable indicators of effectiveness and engagement in online discussion, especially ones that could be developed without the need for extensive coding of contributions. Do you think any of the following might be useful:
-number of contributions to a thread
-length of a thread in days
-intensity of contributions to a thread (contributions per day)
-ratio of teacher to student contributions
Or, if we have to go to coding:
-percentage of 'interactive or collegial' as opposed to 'individual' contributions (ie contributions that build on others rather than just articulate an individual's point of view
-percentage of 'interactive' contributions in first 25% (or 50%) of contributions
-...

Any others?

Workshop materials

Hi guys, thanks for the positive feedback from those who attended. All of the materials are either available from or will be available from the project web site linked above. I'll be putting updated materials up next week but much of what I used is already there.

Feel free to email comments to me stephen.marshall@vuw.ac.nz

Multimodal information

Multimodal information is, information presented in multiple modes such as visual and auditory modes. The need for multimodal design is based in research that demonstrates that learners, for many reasons, use a variety of learning/cognitive styles to process information and that students prefer to learn in environments that reflects the cognitive style in which they are most comfortable. Although most researchers agree that different learning styles exist and readily acknowledge their significance, current research indicates that many instructional events, particularly at the higher education level, only target generic cognitive styles, or certain types of learners, particularly read/write learners. This has led to some students feeling disenfranchised, especially students whose learning preferences are not matched by the style of presentation, which in turn may impede their performance.
